Police Communications Supervisor Selection Committee

City of Phoenix Personnel Department

135 N. 2nd Avenue

Phoenix, AZ 85003

Dear Police Communications Supervisor Selection Committee:

I am interested in the Police Communications Supervisor position currently open.  My achievements, education, military, and work experience make me an excellent candidate.  I meet, and exceed, all the stated requirements.

With over six years of experience as a Police Communications Operator, including cross-training within my first nine months, I have gained numerous skills imperative for a supervisor.  Currently a police employee in good standing, I have met all background requirements for the City of Phoenix Police Department, as well as, have experience working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.

As a Police Communications Operator Radio/911, I am experienced in the operation of Police Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.), the 800 MHz radio, ACIC, NCIC, ACJIS, Vesta, and Elite systems.  In addition to these systems, I am proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Recognizing the importance of public service in my current and prospective position, I have maintained a professional demeanor with citizens, supervisors, and co-workers, both sworn and civilian.  Often dealing with citizens in a heightened emotional state, I have proved my ability to work under stressful conditions where quick response time is essential.  My work history includes dealing with citizen complaints in a fair and composed manner.  My familiarity with bureau policy and procedures, as well as, Police Department regulations enables me to provide service within internal guidelines.  On a broader level, I am experienced with State, Civil, and Criminal Procedures and laws, and Federal and State law enforcement agencies and their operations.

My supervisory experience also extends through my work history.  For over twelve years, I have assisted in the training of new employees, as well as, external customers.  I have learned to effectively communicate with co-workers of various ages, educational, and cultural backgrounds.  I have supervised up to twenty employees.  My familiarity with FMLA and other programs exemplify my ability to handle employee situations common to the Communications Bureau.  I have worked with employee scheduling, attendance, and performance evaluations in previous positions, as well as, my current Police Communications Operator position.  Having been assigned to eleven different supervisors during my tenure, I have successfully worked with many of the current supervisors.  The flexibility inherent in this also shows my ability to be professional with many different people.  I satisfied the requirements for the City of Phoenix’s Pre-supervisory certificate in 2004 and placed fourth on the last supervisor list prevented from promoting due only to the unavailability of a position.  Since that time, I have over ten hours as acting supervisor.

In addition to my work experience, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Business Management.  My program included courses in statistics, as well as, courses in finance, economics, and accounting.  I have also taken several courses through the City of Phoenix.  I have completed classes in Introduction to Crime Analysis, Introduction to Supervision, Panel Interviewing, and various Spanish language classes.

From the beginning of my employment history, I have worked closely with both internal and external customers.  For over twelve years, I have worked in customer service both in subordinate and supervisory positions with the unique and invaluable ability to switch between the two when needed.  I am confident I can bring extensive experience, ability to work well with others, motivation, and a fresh perspective to the position of Police Communications Supervisor willing to maintain and promote the Communications Department as a professional, efficient, and enjoyable work environment.  This position will also allow me the opportunity to further develop my skills while remaining with the Phoenix Police Communications Bureau.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jane Smith
